     GASTONIA — Richard “Dickie” Ellis Giles, 66, died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Nov. 21, 2013, at CaroMont Regional Medical Center.

   A native of High Point, he was the son of the late Hugh and Peggy Giles.

   Dickie was a 1965 graduate of Frank L. Ashley High School,    where he lettered    in three sports.

   He was the high  school quarterback and holds the record for throwing five touchdown passes in a game.

   He also participated in the Shrine Bowl game in 1964. He attended the University of Cincinnati where he played football. He also attended Belmont Abbey College where he played baseball as well as playing for American Legion Post 23 for several years. He was a former member of Pine Island Country Club and was an avid golfer and fisherman. Dickie was a U.S. Army Veteran, a sales representative and a member of First United Methodist Church.

   A service to celebrate his life will be held 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. James Westmoreland and the Revs. David Christy and Greg Plott officiating.

   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia.

   Survivors include his devoted wife, Sybil G. Giles; sons, Richard W. Giles and Scott T. Giles; stepchildren, Kris C. Lyon (Keith), Jimmie C. Gillespie (William), Stephen Cagle (Courtney); sisters, Jane Smith (James), Millie Horne (Jeff); brothers, Hugh Giles (Jeanine); Chris Giles (Tiz Johnston); grandchildren: Preston Lyon, Patrick Lyon, Kelsey Cagle, Kendall Cagle, Shawne Webster, Payton Gillespie, Pierson Gillsepie, Riley Cagle and Rosie Cagle; 9 nieces and nephews; three great nieces and nephews; and his very special buddy and companion, Tanner.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Emily Cagle.

   The family wishes to express a special thanks to the nursing staff and doctors at CaroMont Regional in the SICU for their care and support during this time and also to the staff at Belaire Rehabilitation, especially the CNA’s Lindsay and Claire.

   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Music Fund, 190 E. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28052.
