Obituary
On Tuesday afternoon, my father, Ron Ownbey passed away much too soon. He was a rascal, a joker, sometimes a flirt and always an entertainer. He cherished his family and friends, loved the church and continually practiced his faith through fellowship and outreach. He was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he was a lay pastor, Sunday School teacher for the “Do Drop Inn” class, small group leader, served on church council and held several positions. He was a current member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where he was extremely involved with bible study and music. He was passionate about volunteering and organizing fundraisers with the Church’s Dream Center as a mentor to young men and women.
He had more enthusiasm and energy than someone in their twenties. He loved a challenge and was an optimist in a time of skepticism.
He believed that through music, people from all walks of life could come together, forget their differences and find common ground. He believed that music had the power to touch us, to ease our troubles, to help us forget our sorrows and spread peace and understanding, long past the final note of the last song at the end of the show. He had a passion for using music to help bring good to the community whether it be a fundraiser to raise money for high school band uniforms or a spectacular benefit for Gaston Hospice. He was the founder of Elite Artists Network that brought artists together to promote one another. He was a dreamer of big things and everything he touched became better.
He was born January 19, 1947, the son of Reaumur Stearnes Ownbey and Margaret Connell Ownbey.
Ron is survived by his children, Brian Ownbey and wife, Kiyomi, Susie Farnick and husband, Michael, and Ashton Poole and husband, Jason; Grandchildren, Brooks and Hallie Poole, Callon Farnick, Grace Ownbey; brothers-in-law, Hugh Sherrill and Donald Sherrill and wife, Kim.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 4:00 PM at Bethlehem Baptist Church South Campus. A reception will immediately follow.
