Sandra Kay Grissom (Whitfield)

Mrs. Kay Grissom Whitfield, 56, died peacefully at her home in Wilmington, NC, surrounded by her family and friends on April 1, 2004. Kay, of Gastonia, NC, was well known for her cheerful spirit, sweet smile and kind heart that attracted so many special people into her life. In August, she would have celebrated 37 years of marriage with her husband and high school sweet heart, Joel. Kay loved playing Teletubbies with her 2-year-old granddaughter, Emma; a good joke; and walks with her dogs, Lucy and Sally.

While living with her family in California from 1979 to 1994, Kay owned two design businesses. She later worked in Wilmington and in Charlotte as a kitchen designer.

Kay was preceded in death by her father, Aaron Eugene Grissom, in 1953 and by her mother, Marjorie Cranford Costner, in 2001. In addition to her husband, Kay is survived by daughter Amanda Shannon Lisk, son-in-law, Brandon and granddaughter Emma Claire Lisk; sister Terry Wilson, brother-in-law Lee and nieces Monica and Amy Wilson; and a host of other aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Kay Whitfield Scholarship for the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, c/o Advancement Services, 601 S. College Road, Wilmington, NC 28403-5909.

The family will receive friends at a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at North Grove Presbyterian Church, 7721 Alexander Road, Ogden. The service will be conducted by pastors Alan Dollar and Bill Solomon. A private, family burial will be held at Oakdale Cemetery prior to the memorial service.

The family would like to thank all of the many friends and loved ones for their prayers, cards, and gifts of food and flowers over the past four months.
